The garden locust (Acanthacris ruficornis) is native to Africa, found south of the Sahara.
In South Africa it is known as the common brown grasshopper, often wrongly identified as a locust in gardens. Only swarming grasshoppers are truly locusts.
In South Africa, the Congo, and the Shael the grasshoppers are eaten as food, cooked, fried, or roasted, with the wings and legs removed.
The insects' habitat is in open areas with trees as they feed on the leaves of trees.
